I’ve often told my children and grandchildren that if there was something they wanted to do, well, they needed to march their feet in that direction. I’ve recently taken up writing again, and I’m going to follow my own advice.

My name is Joan Houghton. I am originally from Red Oak, IA. where my father was the editor of the Red Oak Express in my childhood. He had a column writing on important issues of the day, large and small. At the end of each column we would sign off with the phrase, “Good Luck, Good Friends.”

I followed in his footsteps while at the University of Iowa and Cornell College. It has been a lifetime since I wrote for the Daily Iowan student newspaper. In the meantime I have lived in Iowa City raising children, followed by ¬†grandchildren, and now I’m on to great-grandchildren.

My writing today mostly involves observing the world around me. I have often sent writings on to my family by e-mail. Now, I’m also going to post them here.

Good Luck, Good Friends.
